Conditions Treated by Gamma Knife Radiosurgery
Gamma Knife® is used to treat a variety of conditions, but it stands out in offering hope for many brain tumor patients who have inoperable conditions and for patients whose age or medical conditions prevent surgery. The technology also may be used in conjunction with open-skull brain surgery. Non-invasive Gamma Knife offers hope for patients with tumors formerly considered inoperable and those considered high-risk for open surgical procedures due to illness or other conditions.
Gamma Knife is used to treat the following:
- Metastatic tumors within the head originating from a primary site elsewhere in the body
- Acoustic Neuroma
- Malignant or benign tumors originating within the brain or its coverings, including gliomas, meningiomas, pituitary and pineal tumors, acoustic neuromas, and others
- Trigeminal neuralgia
- Movement disorders such as essential tremor in patients who are not candidates for deep brain stimulation.
- Arteriovenous Malformations (AVMs) and other vascular disorders of the brain
